National Taxpayers Union Statement on Mnuchin Confirmation Hearing

The following is a statement from Pete Sepp, president of the National Taxpayers Union:

“During his confirmation hearing today before the Senate Finance Committee, Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin stated several times that he is committed to policies that will help put the nation back on the right economic path. Significantly, Mr. Mnuchin noted that creating economic growth is a critical issue for the incoming Trump administration and that passing comprehensive tax reform is a central component of that goal. This is a commitment that must be honored. Right now our complex and burdensome tax code is past its expiration date and ripe for reform. It is costing Americans roughly $234 billion in time and out-of-pocket costs on complying with the tax code, in the process stifling innovation, investment and job creation. The outgoing Obama administration has taken to new levels some of the worst behaviors of its predecessors, by attempting to manipulate tax laws so that they reward or punish certain economic sectors. This pattern of discriminatory policymaking must end under the next Treasury Department. National Taxpayers Union encourages both parties in Congress to work diligently with the new administration and achieve neutral, comprehensive tax reform that brings our tax code into the 21stCentury.”
